This year's orphan
Each of the last three summers, when the whitetail fawns are about 8 to 10 weeks old, we notice that we have an orphan fawn visiting our yard. This is a photo of this year's orphan. We believe that the mothers are killed by poachers. We think that, so far, these orphans have survived into the winter. This little guy will need to find a group--a herd--to join for the winter in order to survive. Good luck little guy--or gal.

Turns out it is a frog, not a toad!
A Cope's treefrog or Eastern gray treefrog. And he or she has decided that sitting all day on the push-up thingy of my patio umbrella is the perfect spot for protection from air and ground predators plus a great view of the territory.
